The ornamental apple proves its uncomplicated disposition when it comes to its propagation. Those who are willing to accept a comparatively high failure rate ignore the expensive grafts from the tree nursery. It's so easy to grow young Malus hybrids from cuttings and sticks.

Ornamental apples are best propagated by cuttings or sticks

This is how the summer offspring with cuttings succeeds

At the time of fruit formation, life pulsates in the ornamental apple right up to the tips of the shoots. The months of June and July are therefore ideal for propagation with top cuttings. How to do it:

  • Take cuttings below a leaf node with a length of 10-15 cm
  • Defoliate the lower part of the branch, remove blossoms, buds and fruits
  • Place the cuttings in pots with moist peat sand or poor potting soil

Put a plastic bag over each jar. Wooden sticks act as spacers to prevent contact between the foil and the cuttings. In a partially shaded, warm location, keep the substrate slightly moist and air the cover daily.

Multiply ornamental apples in winter with sticks - this is how it works

Immediately after the leaves have fallen, you can cut off the desired number of sticks. Pencil-length annual branches with a bud at each end are ideal. Put them in a finely crumbly bed in a partially shaded, sheltered spot in the garden. Please make sure that a maximum of a quarter of the stick is still visible. It's this easy:

  • Water the stick bed when it is dry
  • Do not apply fertilizer until the first sprouting in spring
  • Pinch off the young ornamental apples once when they are 15-20 cm high for bushy growth

It is advantageous for rooting if you cover the bed with fleece or a foil tunnel from the middle/end of February. (11.46€) Make sure that the soil moisture is constant, because drought inevitably puts an end to young plant life. Once your pupils have reached a height of 10 cm, the protective hood can be removed again. Strong young trees will have developed by autumn, which you can plant in the desired location.

tips

The decorative ornamental apples stay on the tree for so long that winter sometimes puts a snow cap on them. This is not only beautiful to look at, but also makes your feathered garden dwellers very happy. Therefore, please leave at least part of the non-toxic fruit hanging as a valuable food source for birds.
