Red clover is one of the robust wild plants that can easily be grown in the garden - whether as an ornamental plant, for harvesting animal feed or the pretty flowers for the kitchen. You can propagate or sow red clover by roots. This is how sowing works.

Which location is best for sowing?
Red clover is undemanding and makes no great demands on the location. The ideal location looks like this:
- Sunny to semi-shady
- nutritious garden soil
- not too acidic soil
- well-drained, moderately moist soil
If the soil in the garden is too acidic, mix in some lime. Like almost all plants, red clover does not tolerate waterlogging.
When is the best time for sowing?
Outdoors, you can sow from April to the end of August. But remember that you have to water more frequently in summer, otherwise the seeds and later the seedlings will dry out.
Sow red clover in the pot
Sowing in a pot is not a problem if you use a pot that is as deep as possible. The plant gets very long taproots. Balcony boxes (€109.00) are not suitable for sowing red clover.
Use simple garden soil that is not too acidic. If the red clover is to be eaten later or fed to the guinea pig, make sure that you use uncontaminated soil.
This is how it is sown
Do not sow the seed too densely on the loosened soil. Press lightly and keep moist. Red clover germinates in the light and is not or only very lightly covered with soil.
Depending on the weather, it takes up to three days to a week for the seeds to germinate.
In the field you should prick out the plants. A planting distance of 20 centimeters is ideal.
Winter protection is not required
Red clover is a native perennial that tolerates frost very well. Winter protection is not required.
Red clover gathers its leaves in autumn. In the spring, the meadow clover will sprout again.
tips
Red clover is also very easy to propagate through the roots. New plants will sprout even from small pieces. It is even easier to propagate via foothills, which you simply have to dig up.
