Rambler roses have only been conquering German gardens for a few years, after all it is a comparatively young breed. In contrast to the climbers, these roses from the group of climbing roses are able to climb more or less independently - this is already indicated by their name, after all the English word "ramble" means nothing more than "climbing". Like other roses, rambler roses require careful maintenance to ensure healthy growth and plentiful blooms.

Rambler roses are very easy to care for

Do you have to water rambler roses?

Except in very hot and dry periods and after planting or fertilizing, you do not have to water the rambler roses that have been planted out. Thanks to their very deep taproots, the plants are able to provide themselves with sufficient water. If you do need to water, avoid wetting the leaves.

When and how often should you fertilize rambler roses?

Like all roses, ramblers are heavy feeders and should therefore be fertilized regularly. There are three fertilization dates per year for planted specimens:

  • At the beginning of April, an organic fertilizer or a special rose fertilizer (€12.86) is used as fertilizer.
  • The second time after the first flowering.
  • The third time as final fertilization with Patentkali between the beginning and middle of August.

When should rambler roses be pruned?

Basically, a pruning is not necessary, except for the necessary care or thinning out. However, if pruning is necessary, the appropriate time depends on the flowering times of the rambler rose variety. Frequently flowering ramblers are pruned in spring, while once-flowering ones are pruned immediately after flowering.

How to prune rambler roses

Actually only diseased and dead shoots as well as branches that are too close together have to be removed. If possible, pruning should be avoided.

Do you have to attach the shoots of the rambler roses?

Although the rambler rose is very well able to hold itself due to its very soft and flexible shoots, you should still attach the shoots to the trellis with raffia or a similar material. The meter-high rambler roses tend to be torn down and destroyed in strong winds or storms, which can be prevented by tying them down.

Are Ramblers susceptible to certain diseases?

Like all roses, rambler roses are quite susceptible to various fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew.

tips

If possible, do not plant rambler roses together with climbers. While both groups of roses are quite similar in appearance, they have different needs and characteristics.
