Peonies tolerate transplanting extremely poorly. It often takes two years for them to recover from the stress and flower again. It is therefore important to select an ideal location from the start. But where do these plants really feel at home?

The peony likes it bright but not too sunny

Gladly sunny

Although peonies grow well in the sun, if given the choice they would choose a location out of the sun. The place to grow and thrive can be under sparse deciduous trees. We recommend locations where the peonies are not exposed to the blazing midday sun.

Areas where to plant peonies

A peony looks gorgeous as a solitaire on an open lawn. But also at the edge of the path, in the background of the garden, in the fence area and in the bed, it does not fail to have an effect during the flowering period. It can even thrive on a balcony or patio, as long as the location isn't directly south and totally sheltered.

A suitable substrate at the site

The soil at the location also does not play a subordinate role. Peonies do not particularly like heavy, clayey or very sandy, light soils. In the former they suffer from wetness and putrefaction, in the latter from drought. Medium-heavy soils with a high clay content are better.

It is also advantageous if you plant your peony in a substrate with the following characteristics:

  • well drained
  • rich in humus
  • medium to high nutrient content
  • moderately moist
  • slightly acidic to slightly alkaline

tips

If you want to plant your peony in a tub, only deep containers should be considered! The peony develops a deep root system and needs a pot at least 40 cm deep.
