Where stony force meets golden flowers, Goldlack achieves its floral masterpiece. The biennial to perennial Mediterranean pineapple exudes its wonderful fragrance in the rock garden, on the top of a wall or transforms the balcony into a lush aromatic garden. The following answers to frequently asked questions explain the requirements of an Erysimum cheiri.

Plant gold lacquer correctly
The special advantage of a biennial plant is the uncomplicated planting by means of direct sowing. Save yourself the hassle of pulling it up on the windowsill and settle gold lacquer in the bed between May and July like this:
- Create a finely crumbly seedbed in a sunny spot with moderately dry, sandy, humus-rich soil
- Sieve the dark germs in 3 times the seed strength with soil, press down lightly and moisten
- Keep constantly moist and single seedlings with more than 2 pairs of leaves to 20-25 cm
- Plant out in August/September in the final location in the garden or in a pot and window box
By the onset of winter, each Wallflower has developed a basal rosette of leaves. In the bed, cover the plant with a layer of leaves and brushwood. Take seedlings planted out in a tub to a frost-free, bright winter quarters. Next spring, the longed-for flower clusters will rise from the native tuft of leaves.

care tips
Before you tackle any measure of the following care program, please put on gloves, because the toxic content of gold paint is tough:
- In case of prolonged drought, water moderately with normal tap water
- Fertilize with compost, horn shavings (€32.93) and lime in March/April and after cutting back in summer
- Clean out faded blooms for a never-ending flowering season
- Prune off hybrids in summer by a third
In autumn, cut off the withered flower stalks down to the basal rosette of leaves. This acts as a natural winter protection in the bed, supplemented by a thick layer of leaves and brushwood. Potted flowers move to a frost-free, bright winter quarters.

Which location is suitable?
Surrounded by sun-drenched, warm and sheltered stone complexes, a gold lacquer thrives lush and healthy. A location that is bathed in air is an advantage so that the dense dress of flowers and leaves dries quickly after a downpour. In half-shady, poorly lit places, on the other hand, the Mediterranean flower sadly languishes.
What soil does the plant need?
An Erysimum cheiri wants a lean, well-drained and sandy-loamy soil. As is characteristic of rock garden plants, the soil should be calcareous. For a hollyhock to thrive in normal garden soil, simply add a little sand, fine grit and garden lime (9.70€). Please proceed in a similar way with the potting soil for the pot culture.
When is flowering time?
In the second year, the gold lacquer blooms from May to August. If you regularly cut off withered flower stalks, new plate flowers will appear and the well-groomed appearance will be retained. Innovative hybrid strains have the potential to rebloom. After the first blossoming, these receive a replacement cut in order to stage themselves in bloom again in September.

Cutting gold lacquer correctly
Regular trimming of faded blooms will ensure a long lasting flowering period. If no other buds can be seen on the semi-shrub, cut off the gold lacquer down to the basal foliage. If self-sowing corresponds to your horticultural design plans, wait until the wind spreader has been able to sow its seeds. Please only carry out cutting work with the protection of gloves so that you do not come into contact with the highly toxic ingredients.

Pour gold lacquer
Your gold varnish favors a slightly moist soil that neither dries out completely nor is in water. Dried substrate always indicates a need for watering. Please avoid direct fire from the garden hose. It is better if the normal tap water slowly runs out of the spout onto the root area until no more moisture is absorbed there.
Fertilize gold lacquer properly
A start fertilization in March/April in the form of compost, horn shavings or bark humus provides your gold lacquer with all the important nutrients for a lavish abundance of flowers. Reblooming hybrids receive a restocking in conjunction with summer pruning. If you shower the soil several times with comfrey manure in autumn, the potassium it contains makes a valuable contribution to strengthening winter hardiness. Potted flowers receive a liquid fertilizer for lime-loving plants every 2-3 weeks from April to August.
hibernate
It is the varieties with simple flowers that have sufficient frost resistance for overwintering in the bed. Nevertheless, without your support, these plants will not survive the cold season in good health. In the first year and after pruning in the autumn of the second year, cover the bed with leaves and needle brushwood. The magnificent hybrids with double flowers are planted in pots and window boxes (€16.99) right from the start. Thus, it is easily possible to give your beloved gold paint in a bright, frost-free winter quarters. Here you water the root ball from time to time so that it does not dry out.

increase gold lacquer
With its conspicuous, up to 6 cm long pods, the gold paint can be propagated by sowing. If you do not want to leave the spread to the Schoterich, collect the ripe fruits in autumn. Please consider the extreme poison content and take adequate safety measures for your health. Instead of direct sowing in May, you are welcome to use the quiet winter time for cultivation on the windowsill. Cover the dark germs with substrate three to four times the seed strength. Germination progresses quickly at 18-20 degrees Celsius in a partially shaded window seat.

Gold lacquer in the pot
In pots and flower boxes, gold lacquer enchants us with colorful flowers and an enchanting scent. In any case, we advocate this form of cultivation, since the Mediterranean ornamental plant can easily relocate to the protective winter quarters. Use potting soil thinned with sand and grit as a substrate, which you fill over a drainage made of potsherds. If you brush off wilted flowers every few days, the decorative effect will remain intact throughout the summer. Before clearing in the fall, cut off the shoots down to the basal foliage. In a bright, frost-free room, water only a little and do not administer any fertilizer.
Is gold lacquer poisonous?
Gold lacquer is one of the highly poisonous ornamental plants. An Erysimum cheiri contains similar toxins as the dreaded Foxglove. The Mediterranean plant is therefore unsuitable for the family garden. The same applies to cultivation within reach of cats and dogs. Please wear gloves and long-sleeved clothing whenever you come into contact with the cruciferous vegetable.
