The snowball bush is very suitable for planting a hedge. Whether you are planning a bird protection hedge or want to create privacy and noise protection, there is a suitable plant for every occasion among the more than 100 snowball species.

The bird protection hedge
Many native bird species use the fruits of the snowball as a food source in winter, as they remain attached to the bush well into winter. Some birds do not eat the bright red fruits at all. However, all parts of the viburnum bush are slightly poisonous to humans, although the fruit can also be used to make a tasty jam. The toxins are lost with cooking.
The snowball as privacy and noise protection
Evergreen shrubs with the largest possible leaves are particularly suitable as privacy and/or noise protection, at least if you want full protection all year round. Here, for example, the wrinkled snowball offers itself.
It is evergreen, grows to about 3 to 5 meters tall and has large oval leaves that offer good shelter. In order to keep the wrinkled viburnum from bare near the ground, you should cut it regularly.
So they plant a hedge
Just like individual viburnum bushes, it is best to plant your hedge in spring or early autumn. You can also transplant potted plants in summer. In any case, choose one of the really hardy species, then your hedge will not need winter protection.
When planting in autumn, make sure that the snowball bushes then have enough time to grow and form strong roots. Thorough watering of the newly planted shrubs is important in spring. You should not cut the hedge in the first year.
Tips for planting a hedge:
- evergreen shrubs offer soundproofing and privacy protection all year round
- if possible, use plants that grow at about the same rate
- Combine shrubs with the same/similar location requirements
