Magnolias are among the most primitive plants on our planet, as they were probably already widespread at the time of the dinosaurs. The tulip magnolia in particular - a very old breed - can take on very impressive proportions and be between eight and ten centimeters wide. However, the tree only grows very slowly and best when the site and growth conditions are optimally met. This also includes the right planting time.

Late spring or early fall is ideal for planting

Of all magnolia species, the tulip magnolia is one of the most frost-sensitive. Its flowering is particularly endangered by late spring frosts, when the delicate, light pink flowers turn brown and fall off. For this reason, young tulip magnolias should at best be planted after the ice saints between mid and late May or in early autumn. In principle, earlier planting is possible from April, but then the tree should be protected from frost.

tips

In general, light frost protection in very cold winters and covering (e.g. with gardening fleece) during the flowering period is recommended for tulip magnolias.
