The blossoms of the vetch shine through the garden like small splashes of colour, enveloped in a delicate fragrance. For this reason, the acrobatic climber is at home in many green spaces and embellishes house walls and bare fences.

Attractive vegetation for a year
Many types of vetches thrive as annuals and are extremely fast-growing. During the summer months, they easily reach growth heights of up to two meters. It is important that you give the plants a climbing aid so that they can find enough support.
Appropriate climbing frames
Wire mesh fences are ideal because the vetch's climbing organs can cling to them. Thick wooden trellises, on the other hand, are less ideal because the delicate plant cannot grow around the strong struts. In this case, simply nail chicken wire (14.99€) to the wooden frame and the vetch will be winging towards the sky in no time.
Make sure the location is wind-protected and sunny so that the tendrils are not snapped off by the wind.
Leave sweet peas to grow bushy
If you let the vetch climb the trellis freely, it will grow bushy and very lush. Only remove weak or withered shoots at regular intervals, as these unnecessarily drain the plant's strength and spoil its appearance.
Stage sweet peas
It is extremely attractive when you pull the vetches in a trellis process. Bamboo or plant sticks that are not too thick are well suited. To do this, proceed as follows:
- Plant young plants in front of a trellis and let them grow undisturbed until they are about 25 centimeters tall.
- Then cut off the weaker side shoots.
- Cut tendrils on the leaves.
- Tie the main shoot to the stick.
As a result, the plant puts all its energy into this main shoot and the formation of flowers. The flowers are very large and can easily be cut for the vase.
Water vetch regularly
The many greens of the vetch not only evaporate a lot of moisture on hot summer days. The climbing plants must therefore be watered sufficiently.
It is also recommended to mulch the vetch. The cut tendrils are well suited for this, as they provide the plant with valuable nutrients at the same time.
tips
In order for the vetch to form many flowers, it is important to remove faded flowers regularly. So the plant doesn't even get to set seeds and blooms well into autumn. This care measure also prevents unwanted seeding.
