The Bornholm marguerite is a member of the Asteraceae family. It impresses with its pretty flowers, which line up in large numbers on its stems. Although it is only an annual, it can be cultivated for several years.

Bornholm daisies are actually perennial, as long as they are wintered in a warm place

An annual plant

The Bornholm daisy grows into a small perennial within a few weeks. If you sow them in March, you can admire the flowers in May. After the flowering period, the plant goes to rest. As soon as the first stronger frost stalks, it freezes to death. It is therefore to be regarded as an annual.

Perennial cultivation is possible

It's the frost that's bad for this plant. Without him, many varieties of Bornholm daisy would be perennial. Within a few years, the plant can develop into a nice big bush. It gets more branches over the years and can also develop a higher number of flowers as a result.

Extremely sensitive to frost

  • 5 °C is the minimum. Furthermore, the thermometer reading must not sink downwards. The Bornholm marguerite is therefore sensitive to frost. At best, in very mild locations and with a decent layer of leaves and twigs, it could survive the winter outside. Otherwise there is no point in hibernating outside.

Origin in Africa

The reason for the poor winter hardiness is its origin in Africa. There, the Bornholm marguerite, a dwarf shrub, is never exposed to frost. Therefore, she could not adapt to the frost that prevails every winter in this country.

How to overwinter the Bornholm daisy

Have you decided to spend the winter? Then you should know the following points:

  • Dig up bedding plants and put them in a pot
  • best cut back first
  • Place indoors in a bright, 5 to 15 °C air-conditioned room
  • pour little
  • do not fertilize
  • Air the room regularly

Potted plants from the balcony or terrace should also be placed inside. This should ideally be done by mid-October. If the Bornholm marguerite has survived the winter well cared for, it can slowly be accustomed to direct sunlight again from April.

tips

If you can't find a suitable place to spend the winter, don't worry. The Bornholm marguerite is easy to sow again in spring or cheap to buy as a young plant.
