A bamboo can reach an enormous size. Plant heights of 10 m are not uncommon. If you would like to have such a plant on the balcony or terrace, you should opt for a dwarf bamboo.
Dwarf bamboo is more suitable than normal bamboo for growing in a bucketFor which location is a dwarf bamboo in a bucket suitable?
First you should plant your dwarf bamboo in a suitable container. Square buckets are recommended, as the root system has more space there than in a round bucket. A drainage layer made of gravel, for example, is important at the bottom of the tub. Normal potting soil is sufficient as soil.
Depending on the variety, place your dwarf bamboo in a bucket in a sunny or semi-shady location. Some varieties even tolerate shade. Basically, a place in the living room is not recommended. Locations on the balcony or terrace are more suitable.
watering and fertilizing
A dwarf bamboo in a bucket cannot deal with drought. Heat can also quickly affect it if the water balance is not right. Therefore, you should water the plant in the bucket regularly. Note this:
- use stagnant tap water or rainwater
- water daily in summer
- Water only when the top layer of soil has dried
While a dwarf bamboo outdoors does not necessarily have to be fertilized every year, fertilizer is essential when kept in a bucket. It is important to fertilize sparingly. Long-term fertilizers or special bamboo fertilizers are well suited. Liquid fertilizers are given about every 2 to 3 weeks.
Hibernation - necessary?
The dwarf bamboo would freeze to death in the bucket and standing outside without protection over the winter. Therefore, you should either wrap it in fleece, place it on styrofoam or wood and move it to a protected house wall, or you overwinter the dwarf bamboo indoors. Temperatures between 3 and 10 °C are ideal for wintering indoors.
Repotting - how often and when?
After the winter, the perfect time has come to repot the dwarf bamboo. Such an action is recommended every year. The new bucket should be twice the size of the old bucket. This is important so that the roots do not burst the bucket with their strong urge to spread.
tips
You can cut back your dwarf bamboo before it sprouts in spring. Don't worry: it can even take a radical cut.
