Leek is an aromatic vegetable that is ideal for soups and a wide variety of rice dishes, for example. In addition, leeks are relatively easy to store in a dry, cool, dark place, in the refrigerator or in the freezer, depending on the desired storage time. Our article tells you what you should consider.

Properly storing leeks - these options exist
You can store leeks in different ways. Of course, the respective location has an effect on the duration of the shelf life:
- cool, dark, dry place (about three to four weeks)
- in the fridge (about two weeks)
- in the freezer (about ten to twelve months)
Store leeks in a cool, dark, dry place
Leeks are best kept in a pantry or in an attic. There you can put it in a wire basket, for example.
Alternatively, wrap the leek in newspaper and tuck it into a bucket of moist soil or sand.
tips
Ideally, you should store leeks upright. When lying down, the vegetables lose more energy because they want to return to their natural state (when growing). Incidentally, this also applies to carrots.
Store leeks in the refrigerator
Simply place the whole leek in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.
Caution: leeks tend to transfer their intense aroma to other vegetables in the fridge. To prevent this, wrap the leeks in a plastic bag and store them in the crisper. Thanks to this measure, leeks do not become dry and wrinkled so quickly.
Important note: You must store pre-cut leeks (from the shops) in the fridge and eat them on the same day or a day later.
Store leeks in the freezer for a long time
- Wash the leeks thoroughly.
- Thoroughly dry the vegetables with paper towels.
- Slice the leek.
- Blanch the leeks in boiling, lightly salted water for a few minutes.
- Shock the leeks in ice water.
- Put the pieces in portions in freezer bags.
- Place the bags with the leeks in the freezer.
tips
You can also freeze leeks raw - whole or sliced. After washing and drying, simply put it in a freezer bag. If you want to use the leeks later, you don't have to defrost them first.
