If you create a beech hedge, you should choose the location well. Later you can hardly transplant the beeches. At best, very young hedges can be transplanted. Older beeches are more likely to die after this treatment.

Once the beeches have grown, it is almost impossible to transplant the hedge

Transplant only young beech hedges

Before you create a beech hedge, you should make a detailed plan. Find a site that offers favorable conditions such as a sunny position and slightly moist, humus rich soil that is well drained.

Beeches grow very old and should be allowed to grow there for many decades.

Ingrown beech hedges can no longer be transplanted. At best, they can be removed with great effort.

Beeches have a very extensive root system

Beeches are shallow roots. The roots don't go very deep, but they spread far. It is therefore almost impossible to dig up the beech trees in order to transplant them. The root system would be so severely damaged that the tree would not grow back.

If you want to move a beech hedge that hasn't been growing at the location that long, you need to:

  • Cut down books
  • Dig up the roots generously
  • Carefully pull out the sapling
  • dig a large new planting hole
  • Insert the tree in such a way that the roots are not kinked.

What to do if the beech hedge is in the way?

Sometimes there is already a beech hedge in the garden of a newly bought house. If you absolutely need the space, your only option is to dig up and remove the hedge.

If you want to build paving slabs or a wall on the spot, it is sufficient if you cut the beech smooth above the ground. The roots are then allowed to remain in the ground, where they slowly rot. The soil is heavily compacted by the stones. As a result, the rootstocks no longer sprout.

If you want to create another hedge or use the location for shrubs, trees or beds, you must remove as much of the rootstock as possible. Otherwise, the new plants will not have enough space to spread and grow.

tips

Beech hedges are ecologically valuable because they provide shelter and food for birds and insects. You should therefore leave an older beech hedge and rejuvenate it if necessary. Even in old age it is still very decorative.
