Another reason why beech trees are so popular as hedges is that they are very robust and rarely get sick. Prerequisites for good health are a good location and regular care. However, diseases and pests cannot be completely prevented.

Which diseases and pests can occur?
- leaf spot fungus
- powdery mildew
- spider mites
- beech wool louse
- Beech ornamental louse
In general, it can be said that a healthy beech can cope well with diseases and pests as long as the infestation does not get out of hand.
With young, freshly planted beech hedges, however, early control of diseases and pests is advisable. Otherwise there is a risk that the young plants will die because they have not yet been able to develop enough resistance.
Fungal diseases on beech hedges
Fungal diseases are most likely to be identified by looking at the leaves. If these curl up, discolour, dry up and fall off prematurely, a fungus is often responsible. Powdery mildew is noticeable by whitish spots on the leaves.
Fungi often appear in very humid summers or when the site is waterlogged.
Cut off affected parts of the plant generously. The beech tolerates a generous pruning down to the old wood. Dispose of all trimmings, including fallen leaves, in the bin - not in the compost!
Pests that occur on beech hedges
Beech mealybugs can be a real danger, especially on hedges. An infestation is indicated by curling leaves that later fall off. You can tell that they are lice and other pests by the feeding passages, larvae or lice themselves.
Sometimes it helps to treat the beeches with nettle decoction. In the case of a heavy infestation, this is rarely enough. In this case, you have no choice but to use a fungicide from a garden store.
Cut off all affected parts and throw them in the dustbin. It is important that you carefully rake up and dispose of fallen leaves in autumn, as the pests overwinter in them and attack the beech hedge again next year.
tips
"Prevention is better than cure" - This old saying also applies to beech hedges. Make sure that the natural enemies of pests such as lacewings, ladybugs, parasitic wasps (€22.99) and hoverflies feel comfortable in the garden. They help to keep pest infestation within bounds.
