The oleasters are ornamental shrubs that are equally suitable for solitary, group, hedge or container planting and do not require any complex care. The shrubs can be kept in shape and their branching promoted by the targeted pruning.

Regular pruning promotes even growth and abundance of fruit

The oleaginous species are considered pruning trees. They tend to form long, rod-like shoots that should be trimmed regularly to achieve better branching. Not only topiary of the young plants, but also the thinning and rejuvenation pruning can be used with the oleasters. In general, however, the annual pruning required for many trees and shrubs - with the exception of oleaster hedges - is not absolutely necessary.

cutting time

Pruning after flowering. Since different oleaster species flower at different times, any necessary pruning measures can be carried out between June and October. The best time for rejuvenation is before the new leaves sprout in February or March. It is enough if pruning is done every two to three years. The hedges are cut annually in June. Pruning should preferably be done on an overcast day.

topiary

The young plants are initially encouraged to branch out better by shortening the long shoots and giving the bush a bushier appearance and the desired shape. The shrubs can be pruned back by a third around the third year.

thinning cut

The pruning that is customary for ornamental and useful trees can also be used for oleasters. Essentially, you limit yourself to the following handles:

  • remove unfavorable inward growing shoots,
  • either cut unbranched, stronger shoots in half or cut them off directly at the base,
  • Cut old, bare, damaged shoots close to the ground.

taper cut

A radical cut in the case of oleaginous trees that have become too large is possible. However, it is better to spread the rejuvenation evenly over several years. Depending on the size of the plant, 2-3 older branches are cut out each year to make room for the young shoots. The remaining shoots are shortened by a third.

tips

The cut off shoots of the willow tree can be used for propagation, which is done in the case of the willow tree by means of so-called head cuttings.
