- When should you plant runner beans?
First raised at home or on the balcony with great effort and now the small seedlings of the runner bean are supposed to move to their final location. But what should be considered when planting?

Which location is suitable?
Runner beans need a sunny spot to thrive. Sunny balconies and terraces facing south-east to south-west as well as outdoors (e.g. garden beds) are suitable for growing runner beans. If necessary, you can also choose a partially shaded location. A wind-protected location is also recommended.
The soil: loose, permeable and nutritious
Before you plant the young plants in the ground, you should check whether the soil meets the requirements of the runner bean. The floor should have the following properties:
- profound
- permeable (drain holes are essential in the bucket)
- relaxed
- nutritious
Plant in the ground
You are welcome to add some compost or guano fertilizer to the soil before planting the seedlings. Place the plants in the prepared planting holes. Now they are surrounded with earth and pressed down well. Then just water!
Decisive: the climbing aid
Fire beans absolutely need a stable climbing aid that they can climb up. It is best to attach them or stick them in the ground before planting. The following climbing aids are suitable, among others:
- wooden scaffolding
- trellis
- pillars
- Poles (arranged like a tent)
- fences
- attached cords
The right planting distance
The fire beans, which are poisonous when raw, should be planted at a minimum distance of 20 cm (30 to 40 cm are better). The closer they are to each other, the more opaque they grow. Then they are also suitable as a privacy screen.
When should you plant runner beans?
In mild climates, runner beans can be planted outdoors as early as mid-April/early May. However, it is better not to bring them outside until mid/late May - when no more frost is to be expected. The plants should have at least 2 healthy leaves. You should have planted the last runner beans by the end of July at the latest.
tips
Runner beans should be planted in the same place every 5 years at most, as they enrich the soil with nitrogen.
