Fat man or Ysander (botanical: Pachysandra terminalis) comes from Asia and makes hardly any demands on the soil. If you enrich the soil with additional nutrients before planting, you will have little or no need for fertilizing later.

Fat men hardly need fertilizer

This is how the floor should be

Ysander is a very hardy, undemanding plant. The evergreen perennial also thrives on nutrient-poor soil, as long as the location and soil permeability are right.

A shady location, even under trees, is ideal. However, the soil must be well drained, since waterlogging causes the roots to rot and promotes the spread of harmful fungi.

Prepare the planting holes properly

  • Dig small planting holes
  • Maintain plant spacing
  • loosen soil
  • Work in compost and/or horn shavings (€32.93).
  • possibly insert a drainage layer

Prepare the planting holes in spring or autumn. Don't put them too close together. A planting distance of 30 centimeters is ideal.

Loosen up the earth deeply. Very heavy soils must be provided with a drainage layer, otherwise the soil will be too compacted and the Ysander will not thrive in it.

Mix the soil in the planting hole with some ripe compost and/or horn shavings.

Fat man gets along with few nutrients

After planting, water the fat man regularly for the first time. Once the plants have grown, you can almost leave the ground cover to itself.

If you don't want to do without [fertilizing completely, spread a few handfuls of ripe compost between the plants in the fall. However, this is usually not necessary.

You shouldn't give the Ysander more fertilizer, because too much nutrient supply promotes too much spreading and you have more work to thin out and trim the fat man.

Do not rake off the foliage in autumn

If the fat man stands under deciduous trees, the perennials are supplied with natural fertilizer. Just leave the leaves lying around. It disappears under the ground cover within a short time. On the ground it is composted and enriches it with nutrients.

tips

Initially, Pachysandra terminalis does not completely cover the ground. During this time, weeds can compete with the groundcover for space. Therefore pull out weeds as soon as possible.
