Pachysandra terminalis, also known under the names Dickmännchen or Ysander, is so easy to care for that the low, evergreen perennial has become a popular ground cover. How to care for the unfortunately poisonous ornamental shrub in the garden.

Ysander hardly needs watering

How do you water Pachysandra terminalis correctly?

You only have to water Pachysandra terminalis directly after planting. Once the perennial has grown properly, watering is no longer necessary.

Do you have to fertilize fat men?

Put some compost or horn shavings (€32.93) in the planting holes before planting.

Later, fertilizing is no longer necessary. Leave autumn leaves from trees and shrubs on top of the perennials. They serve as fertilizer.

If you have leftover compost, you can spread some of it among the plants in the fall.

When is pruning of Ysander necessary?

Dickmännchen can be trimmed all year round, but does not necessarily have to be trimmed. However, it is advisable to cut Ysander if

  • the perennial is out of shape
  • gets too high
  • spreads too much
  • shows diseased shoots

Since Pachysandra terminalis reproduces itself via runners, you should cut off the offshoots at the edges. Otherwise the fat man will later take over the whole garden.

What diseases do you need to watch out for?

In a favorable location without waterlogging, diseases are very rare. If it is too humid or if the water is standing still, the spread of fungal diseases is promoted.

Shoot death and root rot are common. Both diseases must be treated immediately, otherwise the entire stock is at risk.

Ysander is occasionally infested by aphids. You should fight these, as pests weaken the perennials and make them more susceptible to fungal diseases.

Is Pachysandra terminalis hardy?

Dickmännchen is absolutely hardy and, despite its shallow roots, can also cope with low temperatures without any problems.

The biggest problem in winter is the water supply. The soil must neither be too moist nor dry out completely.

In very cold winters, some of the upper shoots occasionally freeze. That's not too dramatic. Simply cut off these branches.
