Fat man or Ysander needs almost no grooming. You don't need to water or fertilize the groundcover once it's established. Pruning is also unnecessary unless the perennials get completely out of shape or produce too many offshoots.

Fat man is very tolerant of pruning

Dickmännchen is very well tolerated by pruning

You can't go wrong when cutting Ysander. The ground cover tolerates a strong pruning at any time of the year.

Pachysandra terminalis, as the botanical name of the fat man is, is 20 to 30 centimeters high. If you prefer the ground cover to be shorter, simply cut it down. The perennials recover quickly and sprout again.

  • Cut possible at any time
  • Shorten fat man
  • Cut plants into shape
  • separate offshoots

Limit the spread of Ysander by cutting

Like all ground cover plants, the fat man quickly spreads through the garden. The perennials become more sprawling and they form many stolons that will take over the whole garden if you let them.

In order to stop the spread, it is advisable to cut back fat mans if necessary. You should also cut off the underground runners.

This is best done with a sharp spade, which you stick into the ground. Since the fat man's roots don't go very deep into the ground, the sting doesn't have to be very deep.

Use foothills for propagation

You can use cut off foothills very well for propagation if you want to plant more shaded areas.

Just dig them up with the roots and put them in the desired new location.

Always cut diseased shoots immediately

If the fat man is too damp, diseases from fungi can easily occur.

If recognized in time, you can sometimes contain the fungal infestation by cutting the affected shoots.

Wear gloves when cutting

Ysander is poisonous in all parts of the plant. You should therefore wear gloves when cutting and do not leave the clippings lying around so that pets do not nibble on them and poison themselves.

tips

If you plant Pachysandra terminalis near a lawn, you should keep a sufficient distance or cut off a piece of the sod. Otherwise there is a risk that the soil will not be sufficiently aerated. You should always remove grass runners at the beginning.
