If you are looking for a groundcover for shady locations, you are right with fat man or Ysander (Pachysandra terminalis). However, you should only plant the herbaceous plant where there are no small children or pets. Fat man is unfortunately poisonous.

Fatty males are poisonous to humans and animals

Fat man is one of the poisonous plants

Fat man, usually sold under the name Ysander, belongs to the boxwood family. Just like these, the fat man is poisonous, in all parts of the plant.

Dickmännchen contains, among other things, the steroid alkaloids Pachystermin A and Pachysamin A, which can cause serious poisoning if consumed in large quantities.

Especially the berries that develop from the inconspicuous flowers are attractive for small children. If there are children or animals in the house, it is therefore better not to plant Ysander.

tips

A non-toxic ground cover that is just as disease resistant and suitable for shady locations as Pachysandra terminalis is the Chinese bramble (Rubus tricolor). You can grow the plants in any garden without hesitation.
