Can't get enough of the wonderfully fragrant jasmine? Would you like to pull a summer hedge out of the climbing plant? Just multiply your Jasminum. This is not difficult and almost always works without problems, even for beginners.

The easiest way to propagate jasmine is by cuttings

Propagating jasmine from cuttings

  • cut cuttings
  • remove lower leaves
  • put in pots with potting soil
  • keep moderately moist
  • cover with plastic hood
  • put in pots later

Head shoots that are half woody, i.e. not completely soft, but not completely hard, are suitable for cuttings. From spring through summer, cut more sticks than you want to grow offshoots. Some cuttings do not take root but die.

Cut the cuttings neatly and cut large leaves in half to give future plants more vigor for root formation. The lower leaves must be removed entirely as they would rot in the soil.

Maintain cuttings until transplanting

The cuttings need a warm, bright environment. They must not be too damp, but they must not dry out under any circumstances.

It is therefore advisable to put a transparent plastic hood over the growing pots (€16.68). It prevents the soil from drying out and keeps the humidity constant.

If possible, air the plastic hood once a day so that the cuttings do not rot or become moldy.

Can jasmine also be sown?

In principle, you can also grow jasmine from seeds. However, this form of propagation is not as easy as gaining new offshoots from cuttings. Above all, the seed that forms in the initially red and later black berries is not always viable.

To propagate jasmine from seed, sow the best-selling seed in nursery pots. Ensure consistent moisture - not wet! - and put the pots in a warm, bright place.

The germination time is very different and by no means every seed germinates at all. However, once new plants have emerged, they are nurtured like cuttings until they are big enough to be transplanted into their own pots.

tips

You can also easily propagate a hardy scented jasmine in the garden yourself with cuttings. However, propagation via sinkers is also an option here.
