Real jasmine can live for many years. In order to grow the pretty climbing plant in a pot or tub for several years, you have to heed a few care tips. Above all, however, the ornamental shrub must be overwintered properly - even if you keep it as a houseplant.

Grow jasmine perennial
Jasmine is not hardy. It must therefore be grown in tubs in our latitudes. As an alternative, you can of course plant it directly in the garden, but you have to dig it up again before the first frost. However, this damages the plant considerably, so you should rather grow it in the pot right away.
Proper care is important
Whether you grow jasmine in a bucket, as a bonsai or in the room - the right care is important if the ornamental plant is to be kept for several years:
- Water regularly
- sprinkle occasionally
- fertilize
- to cut
- repot
Never let the potting soil dry out completely, but make sure to avoid waterlogging. Regular fertilizer applications are necessary during the growing season.
Even if jasmine does not necessarily have to be cut, you should use scissors in spring to shorten the shoots. You achieve better branching and the formation of many flowers.
Rejuvenate old jasmine plants
Older specimens bear fewer and fewer flowers over time. You can rejuvenate these plants so that you can enjoy them for longer.
Shorten the jasmine by two thirds before it buds in spring. In the next two years, the jasmine does not bloom at all or only a little. However, the flowering is all the richer in the following years.
Room jasmine also needs a winter break
True jasmine is not hardy. If you want to grow it for several years, you have to bring it into the house in winter. It hibernates in a cool, bright place that must not be drafty.
Even if you want to care for jasmine as a houseplant in the flower window for several years, you must ensure a winter break. During this time, the jasmine must be cool by 10 degrees. If it is too warm at the location, the flower will fail next year.
tips
Jasmine originally comes from Turkey, where perfumes and oils are extracted from the flowers. The plant came to the Mediterranean region in the 16th century and is now one of the most popular garden plants there.
