In the Mediterranean countries you can often admire entire hedges of real jasmine. In our latitudes, the popular ornamental plant is only conditionally suitable for planting as a hedge. It is not hardy and must be overwintered indoors.

Real jasmine is not so good as a hedge in our latitude

Real jasmine is not well suited for hedges

There are several reasons why jasmine is not well suited for hedge design:

  • Jasmine is not hardy
  • Jasmine doesn't get dense enough
  • Jasmine must be dug up in winter

Perennial jasmine is deciduous. It loses its leaves in autumn. Even if you could overwinter it outside, the jasmine would not form an opaque hedge in winter.

Create a jasmine summer hedge

However, there is a good alternative for growing a real jasmine hedge for the terrace or balcony in summer. Put several climbing plants in buckets and attach trellis. You can obtain offshoots by propagating via cuttings.

Set up the tubs as a border of the terrace or along the balcony railing.

If you cut back the jasmine in the spring, it will branch well and become quite dense. During the flowering period you can enjoy the intense scent when you spend the evenings on the terrace.

Real jasmine must be overwintered frost-free

As soon as the frost sets in, the glory of a Jasmine hedge is gone. The buckets must migrate to winter quarters before temperatures drop below zero.

The perennial jasmine does not survive frost, even with good winter protection. An exception is Jasminum nudiflorum, which is conditionally hardy. However, it also blooms in winter and spring and is therefore no longer as decorative in summer.

You overwinter jasmine in a bucket in a frost-free place where the temperatures must not rise above ten degrees. If the potted plant is too warm, it will not bloom the following year.

tips

If you see dense hedges of jasmine in this country, it is exclusively false jasmine or scented jasmine. These varieties belong to the mock orange tree and are hardy. They are also deciduous and shed all their leaves in autumn.
