Real jasmine does not tolerate frost. For this reason, the wonderfully fragrant ornamental shrub cannot be planted directly in the garden, but is better grown as a houseplant in a pot or as a tub plant. You have to keep this in mind when caring for them in the bucket.

In our latitudes, jasmine is grown almost exclusively in tubs

The right pot

In order for the jasmine to thrive in the pot, choose a bucket that offers enough space for the roots. It should be deep enough for you to be able to anchor a trellis in it.

Since jasmine does not tolerate waterlogging at all, the pot must have a large drainage hole through which excess water can drain.

Normal, slightly nutritious garden soil, which you mix with expanded clay, (19.73€) small pebbles or sand, is sufficient as a plant substrate. As a result, the soil remains loose and the jasmine is not too damp.

Which location does jasmine need in the bucket?

From the Ice Saints, jasmine can go outside in the pot. The climbing plant loves a lot of sun and light, but does not tolerate draughts, nor does it like constant rain.

Good locations for jasmine in tubs are:

  • south balcony
  • Terrace facing west or south
  • Bright entrance area in front of the house

In very wet summers, you should be able to cover the potted plant. Jasmine loves blazing sun, but light shading over midday is recommended.

Caring for potted plants properly

Potted jasmine should always be watered when the top layer of soil is dry. Do not leave water in the coaster. It is best to use rainwater or, if necessary, stagnant tap water for watering.

Fertilize the container plant with liquid fertilizer every two weeks from spring to autumn.

You should repot the jasmine into a larger pot and fresh soil at least every three years.

How to hibernate jasmine in a bucket

As soon as it gets too cold outside, the bucket has to be brought inside. Jasmine is overwintered in a pot in a bright place that must not be warmer than ten degrees. Otherwise there will be no flowering.

tips

Only real jasmine can be grown in tubs. False jasmine or scented jasmine are garden shrubs that become very sprawling and do not have enough space for the root ball in the bucket.
