False jasmine can be propagated either by seeds or cuttings. Propagation by seeds is not recommended, however, as the seeds germinate poorly. It is much easier to cut cuttings and root them in potting soil.

False jasmine is best propagated by cuttings

How to propagate false jasmine using cuttings

  • Cut head cuttings
  • remove lower leaves
  • stuck in sand-soil mixture
  • keep moist
  • protect with a plastic hood

Cut cuttings in June

Cut cuttings after flowering in June. Choose semi-lignified shoots that are about 20 centimeters long.

The lower leaves must be removed as they will rot in the soil. You should halve the upper leaves so that the cuttings can use all their strength for rooting.

Take at least twice the amount of cuttings from the bush than you actually need. Not every cutting takes root well.

Prepare potting soil

Many gardeners recommend placing the cuttings in a mixture of sand and garden soil. In most cases, however, propagation also works if you simply stick them in a protected spot in normal garden soil.

Pulling cuttings in the propagation bed or pots?

You can grow false jasmine cuttings either outdoors in a nursery bed or in prepared pots.

If you pull the cuttings directly in the garden, ensure good winter protection, as the shoots are not hardy enough.

When growing in pots, overwinter the cuttings in a cellar that is not too dark.

Care for cuttings properly

The false jasmine cuttings must not dry out. The best way to prevent drying out is to put a clear plastic bag, such as a freezer bag, over the cutting.

However, the cover must be aired frequently, otherwise there is a risk that the cuttings will rot.

Plant out next spring

By the following spring, the cuttings have developed roots and can be planted in the intended location.

You need a little patience until the first flowering. False jasmine from cuttings only blooms after two to four years.

tips

Rooting powder for the interfaces is not necessary with false jasmine. The cuttings usually take root without any problems even without additional treatment.
