A member of the saxifrage family, the trefoil is an uncommon but popular ornamental plant in local gardens. There are several species of it, including many notable cultivars. Here you get an overview!

Chestnut Leaf Sheet
Rodgersia aesculifolia is called the chestnut leaf in botany. It is hardy like all other species. It originally grows in forests, bushes and meadows in parts of Japan and China.
The chestnut-colored to bronze-colored leaves give it its name. This species shows green-white flowers in June. They can be admired for about a month. Overall, the chestnut leaf record sheet reaches a growth height of between 100 and 150 cm.
Pinnate sheet
Another representative is the pinnate sheet, also called Rodgersia pinnata. Its growth height is between 90 and 120 cm and in its original form it presents white flowers in June.
Here are the best strains with their most notable characteristics:
- 'Superba': pink flowers, fan-shaped leaves
- 'Bloody Mary': dark red leaves, crimson flowers, tolerates shade very well
- 'Chocolate Wings': chocolate-colored shoots, later turning green, pink flowers with a dark red center
- 'Weiße Auslese': creamy white flowers
Stalked sheet
The stalk-leaved record sheet also looks good and is suitable as an ornamental plant for the garden. It is referred to as Rodgersia podophylla by specialists and, like the other species, is native to China and Japan. Its height varies between 130 and 150 cm and in its wild form it has creamy white flowers that open in June.
These varieties are known:
- 'Rotlaub': bright red foliage, brown-red shoots, cream-white flowers
- 'Smaragd': emerald green leaves, tall stems, creamy white flowers
- 'Pagoda': conspicuously large, jagged leaves, white flowers, burgundy foliage in autumn
Elder Leaf Sheet
There is also the elder-leaved record sheet (Rodgersia sambucifolia). Its leaves look like those of the elder and it reaches a height of between 90 and 120 cm. Its flowers are white in the wild form and appear in June. The 'Rothaut' variety is often found in the trade. It is characterized by light pink flowers, dark red stems and dark red leaf shoots.
tips
The fifth species is Rodgersia nepalensis. However, this specimen is little known and rather rare in the wild and only found at high altitudes.
