Hammerbush, also known as Red Hammerbush, is native to Mexico. You have to overwinter it in a frost-free place, because it does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures. Hammer shrubs are therefore grown in tubs in our latitudes.
The Hammerbush must be brought indoors for the winterBring Hammerbush indoors before the frost
The hammer shrub overwinters indoors at temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees. You can keep the shrub in the conservatory or even in the room.
If the temperature falls below 10 degrees, the shrub loses its leaves. But they will sprout again next spring. If you don't have space in the house, the hammer shrub can also be overwintered in the dark basement if necessary.
Be sure to bring the hammer shrub indoors before the first frost. It stays in winter quarters until the end of May. During the hibernation you care for the hammerbush by:
- water regularly and sparingly
- do not fertilize
- watch out for pests
tips
Before you put the hammer shrub outside again after the winter break, slowly get used to the fresh air.
