The radiant aralie is enjoying increasing popularity as a houseplant in this country. Planting an entire room with it feels like being in a tropical rainforest. In order for this to be possible, you don't have to buy umpteen copies. You can easily propagate this plant…

Propagation options: cuttings and sowing
There are various propagation options for the Schefflera. On the one hand there are offshoots in the form of head, stem or leaf cuttings. On the other hand, you can use seeds to propagate. It is generally important with all methods that the new plants grow up in a bright and warm location. Spring is ideal for propagation.
Use cuttings to propagate
The most proven are cuttings for propagating the Schefflera. Proceed as follows to propagate the plant using head cuttings:
- Cut off a 10 to 15 cm long, healthy shoot diagonally from the mother plant (e.g. in the course of pruning)
- Remove leaves in the lower third
- Make a light cut on the underside of the head cuttings with a knife
Now it continues as follows:
- Place the cuttings in a glass of water
- or: put in a pot with potting soil
- when growing in pots: keep the substrate moist
- for glass cultivation: change the water twice a week
At a normal room temperature of between 18 and 23 °C, the cuttings will root after 4 to 12 weeks. Remember to put the cuttings in a bright spot in the apartment! When new leaves appear, they can be potted or repotted in nutrient-rich soil.
Cultivation from leaf cuttings
The radiate aralie can also be grown from leaf cuttings. To do this, you should cut off a healthy and strong leaf including the stem from the mother plant. A thin strip is cut off the lower part of the stem with a sharp knife. That's where the roots will form.
The next step is to place the leaf cuttings 1 cm deep in a pot with potting soil. The substrate is kept moist. Rooting also takes 1 to 3 months with this method.
Sowing is also possible
Sowing is also possible, although it takes longer. You can buy the seeds in specialist shops. This is to be noted:
- Sow between February and March or in midsummer
- dark germs
- germinate fastest at 25 °C
- Keep substrate slightly moist
- Germination period: 3 weeks to several months
- Repot into a new pot when the first leaves appear
tips
As a method of propagation, head cuttings are preferable for the radiate aralie. They usually root most successfully.
