The Aukube, which is only hardy outdoors in mild regions of Germany, impresses with its extravagant foliage. You almost don't dare to hurt it with scissors or shorten the shoots…

Cutting is possible all year round
The Aukube can be cut all year round as long as there is no frost. Otherwise it could be damaged. It proves to be well tolerated by cuts and regenerates itself again shortly. She reveals this with a rapid new shoot.
Reasons that speak for a cut
There are several reasons why it might make sense to pull out a pair of scissors in the presence of the Aukube:
- has become too large (in the wild up to 6 m high, as a houseplant up to 1 m high)
- Prevent balding
- remove diseased parts
- to get in shape
Gentle thinning or radical cut - both possible
You can thin out your Aukube slightly, but you can also cut them down radically. It tolerates cutting down to the old wood and pushes back again. If it has become too big, it is enough to trim it.
Get in shape - not necessary
Basically, the Aukube does not need a cut. It has a naturally harmonious shape. If you still want to shape your shape, you should tackle the topiary between February and March. In old age, this plant no longer needs pruning.
Better to use secateurs than hedge trimmers
Use sharp and clean pruning shears to cut the Aukube. We do not recommend cutting with hedge trimmers (77.00 €). This would cut the beautiful, large and leathery leaves. As a result, the plant no longer looks good.
Pruning to grow cuttings
A more secondary reason for pruning the Aukube is to obtain cuttings. This means that this plant can be propagated easily and quickly. It is best to take 10 to 15 cm long cuttings in spring or summer!
tips
As a precaution, wear gloves when cutting the aukube and make sure to discard any cut off parts and keep them away from children or pets because the aukube is poisonous!
