- After wintering in spring
- Remove from the old bucket and free from old roots
- Choose a new tub and a suitable substrate
Anyone who keeps them in tubs or pots will have to repot them every few years. Otherwise, growth suffers significantly. But what is really of essential value when repotting the Chinese hemp palm?

After wintering in spring
In the spring, after getting through the winter, it is time to repot the Chinese hemp palm. Provided that 2 to 3 years have passed since the last repotting campaign. Repotting is usually required after 5 years at the latest.
Clues that will tell you that repotting is now necessary are among other roots protruding from the top of the soil. Even if the plant's roots are sticking out of the drainage holes below, it's high time to repot. Complete the procedure between February and March!
Remove from the old bucket and free from old roots
At first it can be a bit difficult to remove the palm tree from the old tub. If she's quite big, you'll need someone else's help. Gently pull the plant out of the tub, holding it by the stem. Then loosen the old soil from the roots. You can cut off and discard dead roots.
Choose a new tub and a suitable substrate
Now a new planter is needed. It should be slightly larger than the old vessel. If it is more than 10 cm larger, the Chinese hemp palm forms too many new roots and hardly grows on the surface. The new tub or pot should be deep enough to accommodate the long taproot.
Now it's time to fill with soil and plant the plant. The substrate should or can have the following characteristics:
- lower layer (2 to 4 cm): pebbles or potsherds
- Main substrate: sandy-loamy
- like peaty
- Compost can be mixed in if you like
- slightly sour
- rich in nutrients
- some quartz sand (15.85€) (makes the soil looser)
tips
After repotting, you should not fertilize your Chinese hemp palm and at least until new leaves have formed. In the beginning it is sufficient to water them regularly.
