Whether in a bucket or standing free in the garden - the Chinese hemp palm is an extremely popular plant that provides a tropical flair reminiscent of holidays both in summer and in winter. It is considered to be frost hardy and sun-loving. But what care is required?

Is drought tolerated and when is watering necessary?
The Chinese hemp palm does not tolerate prolonged drought. You won't get waterlogged either. It should therefore be poured abundantly and evenly. It is important that their root ball is soaked with moisture to the bottom. Use low-lime or stagnant irrigation water!
What should be considered when fertilizing the Chinese hemp palm?
In order to be able to grow vigorously, this palm needs a good supply of nutrients, especially during its growth phase between April and September. Therefore, give it a dose of fertilizer every 2 to 3 weeks! Nitrogen-rich liquid fertilizers are suitable, but also long-term fertilizers, for example in the form of sticks.
Do you have to cut the Chinese hemp palm, if so how?
A cut is not necessary with this plant. Any dead leaves should be removed. Fresh leaves should not be cut off. If there is no other way because they are ill, proceed as follows:
- use sharp scissors
- Cut leaves to 15 cm
- wait for leaves to dry up
- Cut dried leaves off the petiole, leaving about 3 to 4 cm left
How do you overwinter this plant?
The Chinese hemp palm can stay outside over the winter as it is frost resistant down to -18°C. But it should be protected from moisture. If the temperature falls below -10 °C, you should also protect the leaves!
When will it be repotted?
Repotting is required every 3 to 5 years. Start repotting in spring depending on your needs and the growth of the plant! At the latest when the roots are sticking out at the top, it's high time!
tips
Be careful with heat, drought and low humidity in the winter quarters: This quickly leads to an infestation of spider mites, scale insects or mealybugs in this plant. As a preventative measure, you should spray the leaves regularly with lukewarm water!
