The spur flower (Centranthus) is a popular garden plant that can now be counted among the so-called "wild species" in Central Europe due to its sometimes widespread spread. Caring for the spur flower in the garden is relatively uncomplicated, and the hardy spur flower is easy to multiply.

The spur flower multiplies itself by sowing

Under suitable conditions, numerous offspring are formed

In a location with sufficient sunlight and without waterlogging, the spur flower forms numerous, magnificent flowers. In the case of the widespread subspecies "Centranthus ruber", for example, these shine in a bright red tone that is visible from afar. If the seeds that develop from the withered flowers reach full maturity, the spur flower usually sows relatively heavily itself. If you do not want this "uncontrolled" self-seeding in your garden, you must cut off the flowers in good time after the flowering period so that the seeds cannot ripen.

Propagate the spur flower by seed

Propagation of the spur flower by sowing is usually successful in a wide variety of garden soils if you have collected the seeds when they are fully ripe or have bought them from a specialist shop. The possible time frame for sowing the seeds is from April to September. Cultivation in spring can result in the first inflorescences in the same year, while plants sown late in the year do not flower until the following year. Centranthus is one of the normal germs, the seeds of which should be covered with a thin layer of soil and kept evenly moist in the bed.

The division of larger specimens for propagation purposes

Older specimens can be dug up in spring for the purpose of propagation and easily divided in the root area with a sharp spade. When using this method, keep the following things in mind:

  • replant the freshly divided plants in the new location as soon as possible
  • to water the divided and newly planted Centranthus specimens sufficiently at first
  • not to divide the roots into too small parts

Even if it is tempting to get as many offshoots of the spur flower as possible at once, too small divisions should be avoided. However, simply dividing an older Centranthus specimen helps the plant to sprout particularly strongly and vigorously again due to the growth stimulus.

tips

Theoretically, it is also possible to grow new spur flowers from cuttings. However, this propagation method is less important than dividing and sowing, since both methods can also be used to produce strong plants without any problems.
