The Japanese umbrella fir is considered a sacred temple tree in Japan. Even if it likes to regulate poor site conditions in this country with yellow needles, it is still a popular ornamental tree. How tall and wide does it get and what does its overall appearance look like?

The Japanese umbrella fir is only about 10 meters high in this country

Growth height in this country and in their homeland

If you plant a Japanese umbrella fir in the garden or elsewhere in this country, you can assume that it will be between 6 and 10 m high. But that takes a long time… In its homeland, this coniferous tree usually reaches a height of between 20 and 30 m. Older specimens rarely rise up to 50 m.

With this relatively low growth rate in this country, the Japanese umbrella fir is also suitable for pot culture. They are often found in front gardens, parks or house gardens. Their charisma in a solitary stand is not to be despised. It looks fantastic alongside ferns, bamboo and rhododendrons, among others.

How can the height be regulated?

If 10 m is too much for you, you can keep the Japanese umbrella fir in check with a pruning. But it takes many years for it to reach such a height. In the first years of life it looks more like a shrub. Only from an age of about 15 years can the tree character slowly be recognized.

Adjust the height with pruning shears or a fine saw. The Japanese umbrella fir usually tolerates pruning without any problems. Only the leading drive should not be cut off. Otherwise, this plant only continues to grow in width. It is better to trim their side shoots if necessary.

How does the Japanese umbrella fir grow?

The exterior of this umbrella fir has the following characteristics:

  • just aspiring
  • well-groomed (even without much care)
  • tight under construction
  • conical
  • evenly
  • profusely branched
  • lively branches
  • umbrella-like double needles standing together
  • Branches are almost at a 90° angle to the trunk
  • Growth width: 1.50 to 2 m
  • Trunk diameter of maximum 3 m

tips

Thanks to the slow growth of an average of 20 cm per year, the Japanese umbrella fir usually does not need pruning. But so that the growth can develop naturally and correctly, the right location is extremely important.
