It evokes holiday feelings and looks fantastically tropical with its wide-ranging fronds. However, in order to remain healthy and strong for a long time, the dwarf palm attaches great importance to proper care.

The dwarf palm is very easy to care for

What is crucial when watering the dwarf palm?

The soil around the dwarf palm should be kept evenly moist all the way to the bottom of the planter as it is a taproot. As soon as the soil has dried, it is poured again thoroughly.

In summer you may have to water up to 3 times a week when it's hot. In winter, of course, watering is less frequent. This is especially true if the dwarf palm is overwintered in a cool place.

What role does fertilization play and which fertilizer is suitable?

You should pay attention to this when fertilizing the dwarf palm:

  • fertilize from April to September
  • Use full fertilizer
  • Fertilizers in liquid, powder or stick form are ideal
  • Fertilizer can be added to the irrigation water
  • Fertilizer frequency: once every 2 to 4 weeks
  • do not fertilize after September

Can the dwarf palm be cut back?

A dwarf palm does not need pruning in this country due to its slow growth. It is fundamentally important never to cut off the top of this palm tree. Otherwise it won't grow any further. You can only cut off brown leaves when they have dried up. Cut them off so that about 3 cm of the stalk sticks to the trunk.

How hardy is it and does it need to be overwintered?

Dwarf palms are hardy down to -10 °C when they are old. They can be overwintered both outdoors and indoors at 5 °C or normal living room temperatures. Specimens that are overwintered outside should be wrapped in bubble wrap around the root area around the pot. Then they are placed on a block of wood or styrofoam.

What pests can you play bad?

Especially when the soil is too dry or the humidity is too low (heating air in winter), the dwarf palm becomes weak and susceptible to pests. It is prevented by regular watering and spraying. The following pests like to attack them:

  • spider mites
  • Mealybug
  • scale insects

tips

After the winter you should slowly get your dwarf palm back to the sun. Otherwise, she may get burns from the sudden intense sunlight.
