Although dwarf palms require comparatively little care and are therefore also suitable for beginners. But in winter you should keep an eye on them. This is especially true if they are supposed to stay outside…

Winter hardy - but winter hardiness has its limits
The European dwarf palm, which comes from the western Mediterranean region, tolerates frost, at least when it has reached a certain age. Only older specimens are resilient enough and withstand frost. Your dwarf palm should ideally be 10 years old. Then it can tolerate temperatures down to -13 °C in sheltered locations and down to -10 °C in unprotected locations.
In wine-growing areas, dwarf palms can remain outside
Dwarf palms in tubs can stay outside over the winter in warm regions of Germany such as Rhineland-Palatinate or Saarland. But beware: Temperature extremes usually occur every 5 to 10 years in winter, and this also applies to wine-growing regions. Therefore caution is called for! Believe it or not, this plant's roots are more delicate than its fronds.
Gear up for winter outside
It is better to protect dwarf palms outside. If they are in a planter, overwintering outside can look like this:
- Wrap the jar with bubble wrap
- Place the jar on a thick log or styrofoam block
- Choose a location on a protective house wall or wall (ideally facing south).
- tie the fronds together if necessary
- make sure the soil doesn't dry out
- do not fertilize
Overwinter planted specimens as follows:
- Wrap fronds with fleece
- cover the root area e.g. B. with straw or brushwood
- not afraid of snow: it protects the dwarf palm from severe frost
- Watch out for frost!
- Remove winter protection from March
Quartering: How wintering works
Dwarf palms can easily be overwintered indoors. If they were outside during the summer, they come inside in October. They can be hibernated cool at about 5 °C as well as at normal room temperatures between 18 and 23 °C. During a warm hibernation, it is important that a lot of light falls on the dwarf palms.
tips
The dwarf yatay palm native to Paraguay, which can also be kept in planters, tolerates temperatures down to -11 °C.
