Cloudberries are popular ornamental shrubs for gardens as well as for containers on balconies and terraces. With their decorative but slightly poisonous berries, they look great, especially in winter. What care do you need?

The haricot needs a lot of water

What is worth noting when watering?

Watering is essential in the care of the checkerberries. These plants do not tolerate drought. Given the choice, they would prefer short-term wet to short-term dry. Therefore, you should water your cloudberry regularly in summer heat, in dry seasons and otherwise when there is no rain! Rainwater should be used for watering.

Does the cloudberry need regular fertilizer?

From the end of March to the beginning of August, the cloudberry can be fertilized:

  • do not fertilize from mid-August (otherwise shoots can no longer lignify)
  • Fertilize every 3 to 4 weeks
  • Rhododendron fertilizer is well suited
  • only use lime-free fertilisers
  • as an alternative to fertilizing, like mulching, e.g. B. with bark mulch

Do you have to overwinter the checkerberry?

Cloudberries are extremely hardy. They owe this to their origin in North America and Canada. You should only protect these plants from winter sun and frost with brushwood, for example.

How is pruning tolerated and how do you go about it?

Radical berries should not be cut. Rather, a light cut is recommended. Between mid-March and mid-April is a good period for pruning. Cut the shoots discreetly! This stimulates bud formation (results in flowering) and accelerates growth. Dead, diseased and old shoots can always be removed on frost-free days.

How does care on the balcony differ?

The care of cloudberries in the bucket, for example on the balcony, is more complex:

  • Keep root ball slightly moist
  • keep from drying out in winter
  • use decalcified water for watering
  • fertilize from April
  • wait 1 year after repotting before fertilizing again for the first time
  • Use liquid fertilizer to fertilize
  • Add fertilizer to the irrigation water once a month
  • winterproof down to -20 °C (can stay outside)

tips

In the summer, protect your checkerberry from drying out by covering it with bark mulch!
