With around 420 members, the sedum family, sometimes also called stonecrop, is one of the most species-rich within the succulent family. Many sedum species are hardy, and varieties cultivated as houseplants also need a winter break.

Many types of sedum are hardy

Overwinter hardy sedums outdoors

Many species and varieties of sedum are considered hardy and can easily overwinter in the garden. As soon as the first frost sets in, the above-ground shoots die off and slowly dry up. In spring you can simply cut off the brown twigs just above the ground and the perennial plant will sprout again.

Hibernate sedum in the apartment

However, sedum plants cultivated as houseplants are somewhat more difficult to handle when it comes to wintering, because the plants should also take a three-month winter break. The stonecrop is cool at temperatures between five and twelve degrees Celsius, but frost-free and overwinters in a bright location.

tips

Caution is particularly required with the tall Sedum species and with various varieties of Sedum lineare and Sedum lydium, because these sedums are usually not hardy.
