You can easily propagate oregano yourself by cuttings, seeds or division. Healthy and strong-growing perennials that reliably pass on their good hereditary traits to the new plants are suitable for offspring.

Oregano can be propagated, for example, by cuttings or seeds

Propagation by seedlings

For this very uncomplicated offspring you only need:

  • Small planters or alternatively yoghurt pots with a hole in the bottom
  • Cultivation or coconut fiber soil
  • A sharp cutting tool

Separate a branch from the plant and carefully remove all the leaves on the branch up to the third or fourth eye from the top. Shorten the shoot a little and put it in the pot filled with soil. After about a week, the small cuttings begin to put down the first roots. You can transplant the oregano outdoors after a few weeks when it has developed vigorously. Alternatively, you can continue cultivating the seedling in a larger planter on the balcony or terrace.

Growing oregano from seed

The oregano forms numerous small nuts, about one millimeter in size, in the faded lip blossoms. From these seeds you can breed a large number of offspring yourself in a very short time.

Fill a planter with potting soil and scatter the seeds loosely. Since oregano needs light to germinate, they must not be covered with soil. Dampen the seeds with a sprayer and keep them evenly moist for the next few days.

Put a freezer bag over the cultivation vessel to create a warm, humid greenhouse climate. Don't forget to air the room once a day to prevent mold growth. Plants will germinate in about a week in a bright spot out of direct sunlight. If you have reached a size of ten centimetres, you can separate them.

propagation by division

This form of propagation succeeds very easily. By dividing, you not only get several oregano shrubs, the plant is also rejuvenated and sprout more vigorously. The right time to divide the clumps is early spring. Follow these steps:

  • Dig up the perennial carefully.
  • Divide from top to bottom with a fork.
  • Shorten the roots a bit.
  • Bury divided perennials again with sufficient planting distance.
  • Water well.

tips

Wait about a quarter of a year until you harvest the first leaves from the divided oregano. By plucking off the leaves early, the plant is unnecessarily weakened and consequently produces fewer leaves and essential oils.
