Canna takes some time to flower. In order not to have to wait until summer for their flowers, growing the seeds at home is preferable to direct sowing outdoors. But how does that work and what are the other reasons for preferring it?

Early cannas can be planted out from May

Why should one prefer the flower cane?

The main reason is the faster onset of flowering. There are also the following aspects:

  • Seeds are difficult to germinate because of their hard shell
  • Seeds need favorable ambient temperature and humidity to germinate
  • Germination time can last several months without preponing

What is the best time?

The seeds of the flower cane should be set to germinate immediately after they have ripened. This is the case in late autumn. They should be sown at home at the beginning of the year or the beginning of February at the latest. Otherwise, no flowering can be achieved in the same year.

How is advancement performed from start to finish?

Before you start sowing, you should heed the following tip. Grind or file the seeds. A nail file can be used for this, for example.

At the point where a depression can be seen on the seeds, the black skin should be rubbed off. But don't remove too much. As soon as the white layer is visible, you should stop filing/sanding.

Let spring and sow

The next step is soaking the seeds. To do this, the ground seeds are placed in warm water. It is enough to leave the seeds in the water for a day or two.

After that, the seeds can be sown. They are sown 2 cm deep in a nutrient-poor soil. For growth, it is advisable to place the seed pots (€16.68) in a warm and bright place.

Move out from May

Canna can be planted outdoors from May. The location should be sunny and sheltered. A pre-fertilized, humus-rich and preferably loamy substrate with a pH value between 5 and 6 should be chosen as the soil.

tips

Attention: If the growing pots are near the heating, the soil should be finger tested every day. The earth dries out quickly due to the heating air. This can mean the end of the germinated seeds.
