If the vine thrives in the garden and tub, the desire for more specimens grows. Hobby gardeners can read here how the horticultural project of propagation succeeds perfectly with cuttings or planters.

Propagating with cuttings - step-by-step instructions

Experienced hobby gardeners always choose a vine as a mother plant that has proven to be healthy and resistant in the past. In spring, cut off one or more annual shoots so that they have at least 3-4 buds. The cut is applied at a slight angle and just below a knot. Proceed as follows:

  • Cultivation pots (€16.68) fill with a peat-sand mixture, coconut fibers or commercial cultivation soil
  • put a cutting in each one so that two buds are above the ground
  • moisten the substrate to place the vessels in a semi-shady, warm place

During the following weeks, the cuttings diligently root through their pot. By autumn they have developed into strong young plants and can be planted.

This is how the propagation succeeds by lowering

The propagation of vines from Absenker is extremely popular with beginners due to its uncomplicated handling. The perfect time window opens in early summer, when life is pulsating in the plant. How to do it right:

  • pull a flexible tendril to the ground and mark the point of contact
  • Make a furrow 10 centimeters deep at the mark
  • Bury the middle part of the vine so that at least 2 buds are covered with soil
  • scratch this area minimally with a razor blade beforehand
  • the tip of the shoot protrudes from the ground to be fixed to a wooden stick

The sinker is prevented from springing up again with stones or tent pegs. In the following period, the mother plant continues to supply the shoot with nutrients, so care is limited to regular watering. By autumn, an independent root system will develop from the buds and the wound tissue. Then the time is ripe to separate the young plant from the mother and plant it in the new location.

tips and tricks

The propagation of vines by means of cuttings and shoots is only permitted outside of wine-growing areas. The devastating damage caused by phylloxera led to a legal regulation in the form of the phylloxera ordinance in the Civil Code. Within wine-growing regions, only the propagation and planting of grafted vines is permitted. Violations will be punished with high fines.
