Abundant yellow flowers are typical of the cinquefoil. Depending on the variety, the flowers can also be white or red in color. But in order for the flowers to return every year, the cinquefoil, which is sometimes heavily combated, needs a certain amount of care. What is important?

The cinquefoil is very easy to care for

How important is watering?

While regular watering is the key to survival for other plants, cinquefoil does not need constant watering. Watering is usually hardly necessary. The cinquefoil tolerates dry periods very well. Still, it's better to keep the soil fresh to moderately moist. But it should never come to standing water!

Does it have to be fertilized?

The cinquefoil is satisfied with a nutrient-poor substrate. Only cultivated forms that quickly exhaust themselves with their abundant flowering should receive some fertilizer once a year. Compost is best for fertilizing. Sprinkle the compost over the root area of the plants in spring!

Do you have to protect the cinquefoil from frost in winter?

Almost all cinquefoil species are hardy. Those that occur in our latitudes tolerate frost without problems. Some of them are even frost-resistant down to -45 °C! For this reason, no protection in the form of brushwood, leaves and the like is necessary. Even young plants that were only propagated in autumn do not need winter protection.

How is this plant pruned?

Observe the following points when cutting:

  • Cut back after flowering to prevent seed formation
  • cut in autumn or spring
  • Prune subshrubs lightly every 2 to 3 years
  • Pruning in spring stimulates growth and flowering
  • Cut prevents growth
  • missing cut leads to balding
  • if necessary thin out in summer

tips

The non-toxic cinquefoil is normally unattractive to pests. Diseases such as leaf spot disease or powdery mildew are also rare. Prevent an infestation by choosing the right location!
