- Can you overwinter the leadwort outside?
- Overwintering in your own four walls
- Hibernation in a dark cellar
Since the leadwort originally comes from the tropics, it is a little sensitive when it comes to frost. It is therefore considered not hardy in our latitudes. How can you get it through the winter time safely and without frost damage?

Can you overwinter the leadwort outside?
A leadwort in pot culture should never be overwintered outside. On the other hand, if it has been planted out, the chance that it will survive the winter is extremely small. But it's worth a try: protect it with a thick layer of fleece.
Overwintering in your own four walls
The leadwort can also be overwintered at home, provided it is in a bucket or pot. Then it will be put in from October. The place to hibernate should be bright and cool. Temperatures between 8 and 12 °C are ideal. You might find these among others in the conservatory or stairwell?
This is to be noted:
- the warmer it is, the more light it needs
- do not place in the overheated living room
- in locations that are too warm, the risk of pest infestation increases
- if it is too warm, leadwort does not go into a dormant phase (it needs it for rich flowering)
- Do not neglect care in winter
Hibernation in a dark cellar
The leadwort can also be overwintered in a dark place (cellar or in the garage). It should be cooler there than in a bright place. Note that in such a hibernation spot all foliage will be shed and don't forget to water the plant carefully if necessary (do not fertilize!).
tips
Before the leadwort is quartered, its shoots should be cut down radically. As a result, it needs less space at its wintering site.
