Flowering mallows require little care and are very decorative. However, they have one disadvantage: They are slightly poisonous. It is therefore better to avoid the ornamental plant, also known as maple, if there are small children in the house or if you keep pets such as dogs and cats.

Slightly toxic upon skin contact

So far it is not known which toxins the flower mallow contains. However, it has been proven that sensitive people react with symptoms as soon as they come into contact with their skin. The skin becomes inflamed and blisters.

For this reason, keep hollyhocks out of the reach of small children and pets, as swallowing the plant components can be even more harmful. This is especially true in winter when the plant has to be overwintered indoors.

You should always wear gloves when cutting flower hollyhocks.

tips

Flowering mallow provides beautiful flowers almost all year round. With good care and a favorable location, the non-hardy plant can grow up to three meters high.
