Even undemanding plants such as spirea appreciate a little care and reward it with lush growth and plenty of flowers. With around 80 different types in numerous colors, the choice is certainly not easy.

The sunnier the spirea is, the less care it needs

Plant the Spiraea

Depending on the variety, the requirements for location and soil are somewhat different. In general, however, the spirea does not like waterlogging, but likes a lot of sun. Some species also thrive quite well in semi-shade. The months of April and May are considered the best time to plant, but planting in autumn is also possible.

Short-growing spirea, such as the Carinthian spirea, usually copes better with poor soil than the tall-growing varieties. The larger species are ideal for planting a flowering hedge.

Water and fertilize the Spiraea

Older spiraea only needs to be watered if it's been dry for a long time, but it's better to water it regularly in the first year. So he can develop good roots. Spiraea usually does not need fertilizer.

However, if the soil is very poor, give your spirea a dose of complete fertilizer in early spring. Even in a shady location, it can make sense to fertilize the Spiraea. You can then look forward to a more plentiful abundance of flowers.

Cut the Spiraea

Without regular pruning, the spirea becomes lignified. He grows old and loses his form. However, hedges may not be cut at any time of the year. In some cases, this can result in high fines. Prune early-flowering species after flowering and later-flowering species next spring.

Propagate Spiraea

Spiraea is easy to propagate, either by root division, by subsidence or by cuttings. The lowering works so easily that this method is also recommended for beginners. Cuttings can be cut off to the required length during maintenance pruning, which is necessary anyway.

Spiraea care in brief:

  • Location sunny to semi-shady
  • only water older plants if they are dry for a long time
  • Avoid waterlogging
  • cut back regularly
  • Propagation by root division or cuttings
