The bearded beard (Caryopteris x clandonensis) is native to the temperate to subtropical regions of China. The shrub tolerates frost only up to a certain degree. Antifreeze is therefore useful. Beard flowers in tubs should definitely be overwintered as frost-free as possible.

The beard flower does not survive too cold winters
Beard flowers are only partially hardy and do not tolerate extreme cold. If the temperatures drop to more than minus 15 degrees for a longer period of time, there is a risk that the bushes will freeze to death.
In mild locations, where the ground freezes only superficially, winter protection is usually not necessary.
At all other locations you should protect the shrubs from frost.
Overwinter bearded beard in the garden
To overwinter bearded beard in the garden, cover the ground around the shrubs with a thick layer of foliage or straw.
It is important that the roots are protected. If the above-ground shoots freeze, this usually has no effect on the bearded beard's survival.
Hibernation in bucket
Beard flowers are also a real eye-catcher as potted plants. However, plants grown in pots must be overwintered as frost-free as possible, because the soil freezes much faster in pots than outdoors.
If you want to overwinter the beard flower on the terrace, place the pot in a sheltered place.
Place a styrofoam sheet (€35.50) under the planter and wrap the tub and plant in a jute sack (€10.99) or garden fleece, which you can get at the hardware store.
Take care of bearded flowers during the winter indoors
You can be absolutely sure if you overwinter the bucket with the beard flower in the house. Are suitable:
- Cold conservatories
- Frost-free basements
- Frost-free garden houses
- garages
It is important that the temperatures are only slightly above zero degrees, but do not fall below minus 3 degrees. The place should be as dark as possible, since beard flowers are deciduous.
During the winter, the beard flower must not be fertilized. Water only enough to keep the soil from drying out completely.
tips
Basically, the beard flower is cut back in spring. But it doesn't do any harm if you cut the shrub back completely in autumn before hibernation.
