In view of the tropical origin, the growth criteria for basil are clearly defined in the local latitudes. The following overview presents the main framework conditions:

  • As light germinates, basil seeds must not be covered with substrate
  • the seedlings only grow at temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees
  • Young plants only thrive outdoors at a minimum temperature of 15 degrees Celsius
  • as a heavy feeder, nutrient-rich soil in a sunny location is important for vital growth
  • Royal herb stops growing at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius

If the hibernation of perennial basil varieties is to be successful, they should be placed in good time before the first frost. Winter growth only takes place in a sunny window seat at 18 to 22 degrees or higher.
