In June and July, magnificently blooming black elder with creamy white umbels attracts everyone's attention. From now on it won't be long until the elderberries are ripe. The fruits develop in July and August. At first they appear with a reddish tinge that slowly changes to a black-purple hue. This is the signal for the beginning of the harvest.
Of course, the berries are not always black. Some species present their ripe fruit in other colors. The blue elder bears berries that are bluish-black in color when fully ripe. Elderberry, also known as grape elderberry, on the other hand, displays bright red berries. The important thing to note is that you familiarize yourself with the color of unripe elderberries. Fruits picked too early are always poisonous:
- black and blue berries are reddish-brown when unripe
- red berries are not ripe if they shimmer green
