Two aspects determine the choice of location for growing squash. If the light and soil conditions harmonize, this year's season is under a lucky star.

- sunny location with at least 6 hours of sunshine daily
- warm and sheltered from strong winds
- nutrient-rich soil with a thick layer of humus
- fresh and like a little damp
- A pH between 6 and 7 is ideal
Experienced hobby gardeners advocate a location in the immediate vicinity of the compost heap. Thus, the heavy feeder would be at the source of a large quantity of nutrients. You may plant the pumpkin directly on the compost and thus save yourself fertilizing.
