The porcelain flower (Hoya genus) is often also referred to as the wax flower, since the filigree umbels with up to 30 individual flowers appear to be cast from porcelain or wax. It is all the more annoying for many hobby gardeners that the plant with the relatively simple foliage can stubbornly refuse to flower from time to time for a variety of reasons.

If the porcelain flower doesn't show its delicate blossoms, it's really annoying

Do not rotate the Hoya after deployment

As a rule, the wax flower is only cultivated as a houseplant in this country, as it is very sensitive to cold temperatures due to its tropical origin. However, even a rather dark location only poses a limited problem, since no location with direct sunlight is necessary for the flowering of the porcelain flower. However, the tiny beginnings of flowers are usually clearly recognizable on the side facing the window, even before further leaves grow on the shoot ends of the tendrils on this side. Some Hoya owners are willing to turn the visually striking flowers in the direction of the room and its occupants punctually with the opening of the flowers. The affected porcelain flower can then react in an offended way by not blooming in the current year or beyond.

Do not fertilize too much and overwinter properly

The wax flower should be regularly supplied with a suitable fertilizer and water for healthy growth, but the lack of flowering can also be due to an oversupply of nutrients. The right temperature during the winter season is also important: if some species of wax flower are overwintered too warmly, the flowers may not form for a certain period of time. For the best possible compatibility, the repotting of strongly grown Hoya specimens should take place in spring if possible.

Pay attention to the right water balance and suitable substrate

The wax flower should never dry out completely in its pot, but it does not like waterlogging at all. Therefore, it should be watered regularly, but never too extensively. It is ideal if the right moisture balance is established via the substrate used and a drainage layer and drainage holes in the lower part of the pot. In order to create the perfect conditions for the porcelain flower and its lush bloom, the following criteria should be observed:

  • Water with rainwater if possible
  • Use low-nitrogen fertilizer for flowering plants (€10.47).
  • don't overheat

tips

An important point in growing the wax flower is removing the flowers after flowering. In contrast to other plants, these should not be removed immediately for visual reasons, since new blossom approaches can often form directly in the same places.
