Moles are protected and must not be killed or hunted. However, gentle expulsion is permissible. There are a variety of home remedies to choose from. Find out below how to use garlic against moles and why you should consider whether you really want to drive the beneficial insect away.

Garlic is an effective home remedy for moles

The mole as a protected beneficial creature

The mole is considered a beneficial creature and is protected under Section 44 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act:

"It is forbidden to … pursue, capture, injure or kill wild animals of specially protected species or to take, damage or destroy their development forms from the wild … "

And not without reason: moles feed on pests such as grubs, caterpillars, snails and other insects. They also loosen the soil and thus ensure good soil quality. Vegetables and roots are completely uninteresting to them, which is why they do not pose a threat to vegetable gardens. Only the molehills annoy lawn lovers.

Drive away mole with garlic

Moles have a very good sense of smell and excellent hearing. Pungent odors are therefore about as pleasant for them as a permanent flash of light in the eyes is for us. Both a garlic plant and cut cloves help against moles. So hard-working gardeners can take precautionary measures by planting garlic around their lawn or vegetable garden. For the quick version, you only need a few cloves of garlic:

  1. Peel the toes.
  2. Score them multiple times or flatten them to really release the flavor.
  3. Dig up a few mounds and now put a toe in each molehill.
  4. Repeat the process after a few days if the mole hasn't moved yet.

tips

Other smells also scare the mole away, for example: essential oils from citrus fruits, buttermilk, vinegar, dog hair or mothballs.
