Onion juice is a proven home remedy for coughs. In this article we explain how you can produce the natural medicine yourself and for whom it is suitable.

ingredients
- 1 fresh onion
- Liquid honey
If you avoid animal products, you can replace the honey with cane sugar or a vegan sweetener. You should also use sugar instead of honey for children under the age of one.
The alliin contained in the onion is largely responsible for the intense taste of the juice. Onion juice, which you make from onions, is sometimes too spicy for children. Therefore, use milder vegetable onions for the little ones.
preparation
- Peel the onion and cut into rough cubes.
- Pour into a clean, rinsed jar.
- Pour the sweetener on top and seal the jar.
- Place in the fridge for a few hours until juice has formed.
- Use granulated sugar, shaking occasionally.
The juice will keep well sealed for about three days. If the cold is not over yet, you should prepare fresh onion juice.
How often should the cough syrup be taken?
You can take the natural remedy three times a day if you have a cough, or even every hour if you have severe symptoms. The dose for children is one teaspoon, for adults two. Leave the onion juice in your mouth for a while so that the local antitussive effect takes effect quickly.
Can onion juice be overdosed?
An overdose of the drug is rather unlikely. If you want to be on the safe side, you should not eat more than 50 grams of fresh onions per day. The reason is the substance diphenylamine contained in the onions, which can lead to kidney damage if consumed over a long period of time and in very high doses.
What side effects can occur?
If you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the onion, do not ingest onion juice.
Known side effects of onion juice are contact eczema and irritation of the nasal mucosa and/or conjunctiva. If you find this in yourself, contact your doctor.
tips
Always close the container with the onion juice carefully so that the valuable ingredients do not evaporate. In addition, the intense smell settles unpleasantly in the refrigerator.
